Bodycam Video: Sniper ‘lost sight’ of Trump shooter before assassination attempt

A new body camera video shared by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) shows the aftermath of the July 13 assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In the video, law enforcement officials discussed how a sniper “lost sight” of would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks prior to the shooting.

Sharing the body camera video on X, formerly Twitter, the Iowa senator wrote, “July 13 Bodycam footage provides more info than Secret Service will share w America.”

Grassley also demanded accountability for the security breach that led to Trump being shot in the ear, a retired fire chief being killed, and two other Trump rally attendees being severely injured. He tweeted, “We NEED detailed answers ASAP on security failures TRANSPARENCY BRINGS ACCOUNTABILITY.”

The new body camera video, which Grassley said was obtained from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit in compliance with congressional requests, shows a conversation between law enforcement agents on the rooftop Crooks used to shoot the former president. The video also shows the deceased shooter’s body and blood next to law enforcement officials.

In the video, a law enforcement officer can be heard telling a man who appears to be a Secret Service agent, “Beaver County sniper seen and sent the pictures out. This is him.” Meanwhile, another officer pointed out a rifle located near the body of the shooter.

The law enforcement officer with the active body camera then explained that the sniper who saw Crooks from a nearby building was still in the building.

“That’s the sniper who sent the original pictures and seen him come from the bike and then set the bag back down and then lost sight of him,” the officer told the agent. “He’s the one who sent the pictures out.”

As the law enforcement officers continued to discuss the situation, the agent pointed toward Crooks’ body and said, “Our guy who was just up here told me that there’s a guy detained who is the owner of the bike. And I said, ‘No, no, that’s the owner of the bike.'”

In response, another officer told the agent, “We’ve been up here, so we wouldn’t know that information.”

Later in the video, the agent explained that some individuals were detained after recording the incident. He noted, “Maybe they were involved, maybe they weren’t.”

“The guys that saw them filming go, ‘They were filming us, and then filming the guy up on the roof, and then filming us, and then when the shots started firing, they ran away.’ And I go, ‘Isn’t that what everybody was doing?'” the agent added. “I got no problem detaining them. Again, I’m just trying to detain those guys, find out who they know, who they are, whatever. I’m trying to get clear information to relay back to D.C.”
