A Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol airplane overshot a military base runway in Hawaii on Monday, resulting in the aircraft landing in the waters of Kaneohe Bay. Authorities noted that all nine people aboard the aircraft were uninjured in the incident.
According to information shared by United States Marine Corps officials with USNI News, the Navy aircraft was attempting to land Monday on the Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay runway, which is located on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
“The aircraft was landing and overshot” the air station’s runway, 1st Lt. Hailey Harms, a spokesperson for Marine Corps Base Hawaii, told USNI News.
The P-8A Navy aircraft, which is assigned to the “Skinny Dragons” VP 4 Patrol Squadron, landed in shallow water in the bay around 1:59 p.m. local Hawaiian time.

A statement from the U.S. 3rd Fleet obtained by USNI News states, “At approximately 2 p.m. local (Hawaii), a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon overshot the runway on landing at Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, and ended up in nearby water.”
A picture of the P-8A aircraft was posted on X, formerly Twitter, showing the Navy plane floating in the shallow water.
According to The Associated Press, the P-8A aircraft is often utilized for reconnaissance efforts, the gathering of military intelligence, and searching for submarines. The aircraft, which is manufactured by Boeing, is constructed with many of the same parts as a 737 commercial airplane.
The Associated Press reported that the Honolulu Fire Department was contacted shortly after 2 p.m. Thomas Vaughan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told The Associated Press that visibility was limited to roughly one mile at the time of the aircraft incident due to cloudy and rainy weather conditions.
The U.S. Coast Guard also responded to the incident; however, Petty Officer Ryan Fisher, a Coast Guard spokesman, indicated that rescue operations were quickly called off, saying, “It sounds like all parties involved were rescued.”
Harms told Fox News that nine people were on the plane when it landed in the bay. Harms added that no immediate injuries were reported from the incident; however, the nine individuals were being “medically assessed.”
According to USNI News, authorities have not indicated what steps will be taken to recover the aircraft in Kaneohe Bay or what agencies will handle the investigation of the incident. “That’s still being assessed, as well,” Harms explained.
