A policeman died during a marathon held in Cebu City on Sunday, according to an initial report by the Regional Mobile Force Battalion in Central Visayas (RMFB-7).
Initial investigation revealed that Pat. Lee Rodrocks Carbonilla, 31, a police officer assigned at the Technical Support Company of RMFB-7 collapsed while participating in the 7-Eleven Run 2023.
Carbonilla, a scout ranger, was likely active in participating in various running events, said LtCol. Gerard Ace Pelare, spokesman of BGen. Jerry Bearis, regional director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7).
“We (PRO-7) are very sad about the incident. This is an unnecessary loss of life, a very unforeseen event. PRO-7 is deeply condoling with the family [of Carbonilla]. We remind everyone (police officers) to be very cautious, on-duty or off-duty,” Pelare told The Manila Times in a phone interview.

The marathon was held for the benefit of the beneficiaries of Philseven Foundation Inc., 7-Eleven’s nonprofit social advocacy run.
Witnesses said that Carbonilla was found lying on the ground by another participant at the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway at past 3:00 a.m.
Pelare said that Carbonilla was brought to the hospital and was declared dead by the doctor. “He (Carbonilla) died of cardiac arrest. The doctor said he had acute decompensated heart failure, sudden cardiac death,” said Pelare.
Pelare, who is also a lawyer, said that Carbonilla will receive financial assistance from the Philippine National Police. “He will receive all the benefits under the law,” said Pelare.
Organizers of the 7-Eleven Run 2023 did not release a statement as of this writing.
