Woman kidnaps child, flees naked, and fights cops, police said

An Indiana woman reportedly kidnapped an eight-year-old girl from a local playground, dropped the child off at her home and ran down the street naked, police stated.

Brittany Hurtt, 34, was arrested by Austin police on Jan. 9 after authorities were notified of the bizarre behaviors.

Police said that the woman’s husband flagged down a police car in his attempt to return the girl to authorities. The man claimed that his wife left the girl at their home, stripped off her clothing and began running down the street.

One officer took the girl back to the school. A second officer tracked down Hurtt and found her headed down a street with two white trash bags.

The arresting officer said that the woman struck the police car and attempted to open the door before starting an altercation. Hurtt reportedly kicked the officer in the chest before being restrained in the back of the patrol car.

Emergency medical personnel soon arrived to help transport the woman to the hospital for evaluation. Hurtt was later booked in Scott County Jail. Hurtt said that kids “were being taught by the computers and all the children needed to die,” as she was transported to the hospital for a medical examination, Fox News reported.

Video footage at the school playground reportedly showed the woman climbing over the fence, grabbing the child and taking her back over the fence, according to WXIN. Authorities were also told that Hurtt also attempted to abduct a different girl and has a daughter who attends the school.

Hurtt was booked on multiple charges, including kidnapping, resisting law enforcement and criminal trespass. She is scheduled for trial on Mar. 20 where she could face up to 30 years in prison, according to WHAS.

The incident occurred at the playground of Austin Elementary School. The school district released a statement on the location’s safety following Hurtt’s arrest.

“Austin Elementary is reassessing playground protocols to increase security and safety for students,” said the statement that was posted on Facebook.

The school also temporarily suspended outdoor recess for students.

“We’re taking this very seriously and we are in contact with the Department of Education and with local law enforcement and we will make changes to do what we can to make sure this never happens again,” Scott County School District 1 Superintendent Trevor Jones told WLKY.
