An ISIS-loving extremist who stabbed an NYPD officer in the neck in Brooklyn, then stole his gun to shoot two more cops at the height of the 2020 George Floyd protests, will spend 30 years behind bars.
Dzenan Camovic, 22, was sentenced Wednesday in separate proceedings in Brooklyn Federal and Supreme courts. His sentences will run concurrently.
Camovic sneaked up behind officers Officers Yayon Frantz Jean-Pierre and Randy Ramnarine, as they were trying to deter looting near Flatbush and Church Aves. in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, just before midnight June 3, 2020.
He stabbed Jean-Pierre in the neck, then chased Ramnarine and threw a knife at him. Jean-Pierre fired a shot at Camovic, but tripped, and the two wrestled for the officer’s gun.
Camovic grabbed the weapon and shot Ramnarine in the hand, then shot another responding officer in the hand during a pitched gun battle. Camovic suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but survived.
Ramnarine lost a finger after the attack, federal prosecutors said.
Camovic repeatedly yelled “Allahu Akbar” during his rampage, and he kept a trove of jihadist and ISIS-related material, the feds alleged. He’s a Bosnian citizen who’s in the country illegally, prosecutors said.
United States District Judge Rachel Kovner applied a “terrorism enhancement,” allowing for a longer prison term when sentencing him on federal robbery charges for stealing Jean-Pierre’s gun.
“We are glad that this terrorist who set upon our hero brothers received an enhanced sentence and will spend decades behind bars,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch. “This case should be a sobering reminder to all New Yorkers that the threat of terrorism has not disappeared from our streets.”
Camovic will serve his sentence in federal prison.
