Park officials ‘scaling back’ search for former Navy SEAL who went missing at Yellowstone almost three weeks ago

Almost three weeks after a 74-year-old former Navy SEAL disappeared during a hike with his brother at Yellowstone National Park, officials say upcoming weather conditions are forcing them to pivot to “limited search efforts.”

Kim Crumbo was reported missing on Sept. 19 when he and his brother, 67-year-old Mark O’Neill, never returned home from their four-day camping trip.

O’Neill was found dead a day later along the east shore of Shoshone Lake, along with a canoe, paddle, personal floatation device and other personal belongings, according to park officials.

An autopsy confirmed his cause of death as hypothermia from exposure.

A massive search and rescue effort has continued for almost three weeks, including helicopters, boats, sonar technology and ground crews.

But with snow and freezing temperatures on the horizon, the teams are “scaling back.”

“All of us at Yellowstone extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of both Mark and Kim,” Superintendent Cam Sholly said in a statement.

“I want to personally thank the teams from Yellowstone, other parks and agencies, and partner organizations who worked to help us locate Mark, and who continue search efforts to bring Kim home.”
