Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Security Cabinet approved a cease-fire Thursday as part of a truce with Hamas, putting an end to an 11-day military operation in Gaza, according to Reuters.
A Hamas official reportedly told the outlet that a “mutual and simultaneous” truce between Israel and Hamas will begin at 2 a.m. on Friday.
One official said PM Netanyahu approved the truce on the basis of “quiet in exchange for quiet.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken was unable to confirm the reports, according to CBS News correspondent Eena Ruffini.
Ruffini tweeted, “On reports of Israeli cabinet approval of a cease fire, [Secretary of State Antony Blinken] says he’s seen them. He can’t confirm them. He plans to call his counterpart as soon as he gets back on the plane.”
Last week, the terrorist organization Hamas started a days-long barrage of rocket fire from Gaza into Israel, prompting PM Netanyahu to deploy Israeli tanks and other ground units along the nation’s border in an effort to prevent militant groups from crossing into the country. A top Israeli official also threatened to hunt down every last Hamas commander until the rocket attacks stop.
The Israeli prime minister said the nation was prepared to continue the operation to “destroy the Hamas tunnel network” for “as long as necessary.”
