One person has died after a single-engine plane crashed into a semi-trailer truck outside the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, California, Friday.
According to ABC 7, people near the scene pulled the male pilot from the wreck and attempted to administer CPR with direction from a Fire Department dispatcher until firefighters arrived. The only person in the plane was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, officials said.
CNN reported that an individual inside the big rig was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Video from the incident showed the engine smashed and disconnected from the rest of the plane. The wreck also leaked a small amount of fuel on the ground but was stopped from spreading, fire officials said.
According to Fox 5, it is unclear exactly what occurred to cause the crash and an investigation is underway.
The Piper PA-32 plane departed from Zamperini Field in Torrence at 11:47 a.m., National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson said, according to the Los Angeles Times. Where the plane was headed is currently unknown.
The crash was first reported at about noon in the 2500 block of South Navy Way, according to KCAL/KCBS.
