Trump plans a post-presidential Super PAC, report says ahead of his first public post-election speech

As he prepares to speak Sunday in Orlando, Donald Trump is planning to form a Super PAC, which would allow him to raise and spend unlimited sums on political causes, according to a report by Politico.

Trump discussed his plans during a multi-hour meeting Thursday at Mar-a-Lago, telling his top supporters that he picked his longtime ally Corey Lewandowski to run the Super PAC, Politico reported, noting the plan has not been finalized.

The former president has endorsed his former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ bid for Arkansas governor. In January, Trump met with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy at Mar-a-Lago and discussed strategies for winning back the House in 2022.

Trump already has a leadership PAC called Save America that was formed after the election. Save America has more than $31 million cash on hand, according to a filing with the Federal Election Commission. A Super PAC would differ in that it could raise and spend unlimited sums on political causes.

Trump is set to speak Sunday at the Conservative Political Action Conference, his first major appearance since Joe Biden was sworn in as president.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, a close Trump ally, kicked off the conference Friday morning with opening remarks, calling Florida an “oasis of freedom” in its approach to combating the pandemic.

DeSantis is one of several possible 2024 GOP presidential contenders scheduled to address the conference, which runs through Sunday. Also on the list are: U.S. Sens. Rick Scott of Florida, Ted Cruz of Texas, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, along with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota.

Scott tweeted in advance of his remarks: “Did you hear? The Republican Party ‘Civil War’ is canceled!”
